CULTURE & HERITAGE

Suggested Site Visits Along The Trail

A young America was shaped by the people who traveled the big waters of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail: Lake Erie, the Niagara River, Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. The multicultural influences of Native Americans, French explorers, British soldiers, Dutch settlers, Underground Railroad travelers and conductors and America’s pioneers remain today in the architecture, arts, festivals, and foods found by traveling the 518-mile Great Lakes Seaway Trail, once a footpath and wagon trail. Green-and-white Trailblazer logo signs lead you along the byway to 50 information kiosks and to a series of nearly 100 interpretive signs that share the legends, lore, facts and fascinating figures of our diverse cultural heritage. Click here to see more.

We invite you to enjoy a drive along the Seaway Trail to visit the unique cultural and heritage sites unique to the freshwater shoreline of New York and Pennsylvania. Click on the name of the sites below to learn more about our artists, artisans, architects, carrousel makers, history makers, castle builders, religious leaders, Underground Railroad champions…

Grants from the Arts & Business Council of New York, the New York State Council on the Arts Cultural Tourism Initiative and the Federal Highway Administration National Scenic Byways Program are providing project funding.
