Calling All Quilters: Entries Welcome for Feathers & Fowl Seaway Trail Quilt Show & Competition

Flying South, Too Many Geese, Blackbird Sings Outside My Door, Romancing the Rooster…

The bird species that frequent the St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario, the Niagara River and Lake Erie are the theme of the 2008 Great Lakes Seaway Trail Quilt Show & Competition. The nonprofit Seaway Trail Foundation is inviting quilters of any age and all skills to share their antique, contemporary or new wall hangings and quilts for the March 15-16 “Feathers & Fowl” Birds of the Great Lakes showcase. The historic ambiance of the Seaway Trail Discovery Center in the 191-year-old, three-story former Union Hotel on the Sackets Harbor waterfront provides a perfect backdrop for the colorful display of the byway’s natural resources captured in fabric.

Promoters Stress the Fun of Fabric, Professional Skill Not Required

Seaway Trail Foundation President and CEO Teresa Mitchell, who is herself a quilter, says, “This is an event for quilters of all skill level who simply want to share their joy of quilting and for depicting the beauty of nature. Any quilt with a bird that can be seen along the byway is eligible, and, yes, chickens are birds. The Great Lakes Seaway Trail Quilt Show is a celebration of the natural, historic and cultural themes of the Trail as interpreted with fabric by quilters of all fashion.”

All Entries Receive Recognition, Artist-Designed Bird Note Cards

The Seaway Trail competition winners are selected Viewer’s Choice favorite as voted by show visitors. Top choice will receive $200 cash, second prize is $150 cash, third prize is $100 cash. A quilt designed by elementary school students was selected among the 2007 show favorites. All entrants will receive free admission to the two-day show that includes demonstrations, vendors, and gift shop. Each entering quilter will also receive a set of bird note cards designed by noted wildlife artist Robert McNamara and a show program with an easy-to-make bird appliqué quilt pattern designed by award-winning quilter Mary Knapp of Watertown, NY. Knapp designed a series of patterns featuring nine of the 28 historic lighthouses of the Seaway Trail byway that is one of America’s Byways and a National Recreational Trail.
