Special Children’s Quilt to be at Seaway Trail Show March 16-18

Sackets Harbor, NY -- A quilt designed by first graders will make a special appearance at the Seaway Trail Quilt Show and Competition March 16-18 in Sackets Harbor, NY. Louise Tiemann of Vestal, NY, created the “Under the Sea” quilt using the drawings of her son Isaac and his Vestal Hills Elementary School classmates.

“This quilt will be a special addition to the 2007 Seaway Trail Quilt Show and Competition. Although our theme is Great Lakes fish and the quilt features sea creatures, we love the story behind the quilt and believe show visitors will find it inspirational. We especially invite teachers to come learn about the quilt as a possible teaching tool for their students and to consider using Seaway Trail themes for a project with their classes,” says Seaway Trail, Inc. President and CEO Teresa Mitchell.

Tiemann says, “A trunk show of quilts for my son’s class became a hands-on activity to teach shapes and the basic traditional quilt block designs. The children enjoyed watching the quilt take shape with their help and they like searching to find their drawings of various underwater creatures in the finished quilt.”

The complete story of how the “Under the Sea” quilt came to be, the quilt and some of the children’s drawings will be on display March 16-18 with entries in four competition categories to be judged by Viewer’s Choice ballots. The Seaway Trail Quilt Show and Competition begins with a 6-7:30 pm Friday evening preview and reception and continues 10 am to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday with demonstrations, a daily presentation at 1 pm by Bassmaster angler and quilter JoAnne Flood speaking on “Quilting and Fishing for Both Sexes,” and vendors with fabrics, notions and quilting machinery. A ticket for admission to all three days of the show is $4. Competition entries of quilts and wallhangings will be accepted through March 13. For rules and registration and more information, go online to www.seawaytrail.com or call 315-646-1000.
