Birder-Photographer to Speak at Seaway Trail Discovery Center Quilt Show March 15-16

The grasslands of Eve Sweatman’s 200 acres near Chaumont, NY, provides the opportunity to photograph warblers, towhees, juncos, jays, and finches. But it is the globally rare clay-colored sparrow that sits at the top of Sweatman’s life-long birding list. Sweatman will talk about her experiences as a birder and member and president of the North Country Bird Club, and will share tips for attracting wild birds to your backyard as part of the Feathers & Fowl: Birds of the Great Lakes Quilt Show March 15-16 in Sackets Harbor.

Sweatman will speak each day at 1 pm at the Seaway Trail Discovery Center amidst the quilts and wallhangings showing the diverse bird species that frequent the 518-mile-long Americas Byway that parallels the St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario, Niagara River and Lake Erie.

Sweatman, who recently had a photograph win Best in Show contest honors from Dutch Gardens, will talk about feeding and housing for wild birds. The contest prize is her choice of $1,100 in garden plants. You can be sure she will be selecting varieties that are popular with hummingbirds.

The Saturday-Sunday 10 am to 5 pm Birds of the Seaway Trail Quilt Show kicks off a spring-through-fall series of avian-themed programs at the Seaway Trail Discovery Center and other locations along the byway. “Mr. Bluebird” John Rogers is set to speak on April 5. Check www.seawaytrail.com for quilt show entry rules and birding series program details.
