Almost Our National Bird: Learn about Efforts to Restore The Wild Turkey May 29 at Seaway Trail Discovery Center
Sackets Harbor, NY -- On Thursday, May 29 at 6 pm at the Seaway Trail Discovery Center in Sackets Harbor, as part of the 2008 Birds of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail Series, Bruce Bailey of the Oswego River Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will talk about the success of efforts to restore to wild turkey habitat across the US.
When the National Wild Turkey Federation was founded in 1973, there were only 1.3 million wild turkeys throughout North America. Today, than are more than 7 million. The non-profit organization headquartered in Edgefield, South Carolina, has spent more than $258 million to conserve 13.1 million acres of wild habitat for the bird that Ben Franklin unsuccessfully suggested for national birds status.
There are 15 chapters of the National Wild Turkey Federation located in the counties of the 518-mile Great Lakes Seaway Trail that parallels the St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario, Niagara River and Lake Erie in New York and Pennsylvania. The national membership totals more than 550,000 members.
The National Wild Turkey Federation works in tandem with biologists and wildlife agencies to develop programs on public, private and corporate land conservation, habitat plantings and management, hunter safety, trap and transfer of wild turkeys and research on nesting, disease prevention, predation, etc., often funded by the National Hunting Heritage Super Fund. The Federation supports such other efforts as the 4-H Shooting Sports Foundation and the U.S. Olympic Shooting Team.
The Federation offers special programs for the physically challenged, women and teens. A limited number of JAKES Activity Books for youth will be available at the May 29th program at the Seaway Trail Discovery Center. Call ahead to 315-646-1000 to reserve a copy.
The $5 program admission to the National Wild Turkey Federation program benefits the Seaway Trail Foundation. The 2008 Birds of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail Exhibit and Program Series will continue through fall with live birds and speakers from the Fort Drum Fish and Wildlife service, Audubon New York, the Roger Tory Peterson Institute, and others representing the birding resources found along the 518-mile freshwater Seaway Trail.
