Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association Visits NY Seaway Trail September 21-22

On September 21-22, the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association will be offering a cruise showcasing Buffalo’s rich maritime heritage and lighthouses. A boat tour aboard Miss Buffalo II will provide up-close from-the-water views of the unique set of Buffalo harbor lighthouses and the Romanesque Point Abino Light station near Ft. Erie Ontario.

A Buffalo bus company will take the group for the rare opportunity to climb the tower of Buffalo’s 1833 lighthouse, located on the grounds of an active Coast Guard station, and normally off-limits to the public. The group will also return to the Point Abino Light by bus for a docent-led tour.

A visit to the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society will provide a look at an original Buffalo Main 3rd Order fresnel lens, a 5th order lens from one of the area lighthouses.

Home base for the tour will be the Adams Mark Hotel near the downtown Buffalo waterfront. A “taste of Buffalo” will include Buffalo chicken wings straight from their original home at the Anchor Bar, followed by another regional favorite, “Roast beef on Kimmelweck,” which aficionados consider to be the best beef sandwich in America.

As a registered non-profit group dedicated to the preservation of Great Lakes lighthouses, the Association will use a portion of the income resulting from this event in its hands-on lighthouse restoration and preservation efforts. For more information on the tour, contact the Great Lakes Lighthouse keepers Association at (231) 436-5580 or by email at info@gllka.com.
