November 18, 2009 - Sackets Harbor, NY - The Seaway Trail Foundation has announced Norah McMeeking, author of Bella Bella Quilts: Stunning Designs from Italian Mosaics, as the first internationally-recognized quilter who will send works for display at the March 20-21, 2010 Great Lakes Seaway Trail Quilt Show in Sackets Harbor, NY.
McMeeking says, “The fabulous marble floors of Italy lend themselves to stunning patchwork quilt design. At the Basilica of St. Mark in Venice, while others arched their necks to study the magnificent mosaic ceilings, I sketched the incredible inlaid patterns under our feet.”
McMeeking, who taught community college for many years in Santa Barbara, California, has designed a series of quilts based on Italian marble floors, many with curved elements appropriate for the 2010 Great Lakes Seaway Trail show theme of Circles and Wheels.
McMeeking's book, “Bella Bella Quilts: Stunning Designs from Italian Mosaics,” and a packet of supplemental foundation papers are published by C&T Publishing.
McMeeking teaches and exhibits across the U.S. and overseas. Her workshops focus on accurate piecing and sewing in the round. Her drafting classes feature a technique that requires no math. See examples of her work online at www.bellabellaquilts.com.
McMeeking encourages quilters to enter Circles and Wheels theme wallhangings or quilts in the 2010 Great Lakes Seaway Trail Quilt Show. She says, “There are easy techniques to divide a circle into slices for quilting. Graphs based on circles produce striking designs and are fun to work with.”
Three works by McMeeking - “Cosmati Rings II,” “Chianti Classico,” and “Palermo, for Hoffman Fabrics” - will be on only-for-display exhibit at the show.
Viewer's Choice voting at the 2010 show in Sackets Harbor will select the favorite quilts to share in $500 worth of prizes with a special award to the quilt that best shows circles and wheels on the byway.
Quilting is a cultural and heritage travel theme for the the Great Lakes Seaway Trail that is a 518-mile America’s Byway offering a unique travel experience along the St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario, Niagara River and Lake Erie shorelines of New York and Pennsylvania.
