Tiernan, who has been quilting since 1955, says the wallhanging was made at the request of the David Howard family that owned the house on Ogden Island before the Seaway project.
“Construction of the house began in 1811 and was completed about 1816. It was damaged by fire in 1941 and subsequently repaired. It was believed to be a stop on the Underground Railroad assisting escaped southern slaves to flee to Canada. When the Seaway and Power Project were built the island was appropriated by the Government and the house was demolished along with the other farms and barns on the island,” Tiernan says.
Tiernan scanned a photo of the house into her computer. Raymond Belanger colorized it and the image was transferred to fabric. Tiernan machine-pieced and machine-quilted the wallhanging adapted to a design by Jennifer Chiaverini.
