Boldt Castle & Yacht House
Description:
A COMPLEX RETREAT - Boldt Castle is the dominant feature crowning Heart Island. It was built as a dream house for his wife Louise, the love of George Boldt’s life. But, there are many other fascinating structures, a gateway that assured a grand arrival, a mini-castle that served as a playhouse, a multi-turreted building that provided electricity, and a stone tower that stored water, as well as many other playful objects.
HEART ISLAND - Formerly named Hart Island, George Boldt bought this 5 acre island for a summer retreat after falling in love with the 1000 Islands region. He first renovated an existing “cottage” that was already a grand mansion, but later tore the cottage down to replace it with the fantastic castle you see today. Tragically, when Louise died before it was finished, George ceased construction and never returned to the island.
GEORGE C. BOLDT 1851-1916 - George Boldt immigrated from the Baltics to New York City and eventually became very successful in the hotel business. He managed the Waldorf-Astoria and later owned several luxury hotels and other businesses. He died of heart failure in the hotel that made him famous.
