Strong National Museum of
Play®
Margaret Woodbury Strong (1897-1969)
Margaret Woodbury Strong loved to play and recognized the importance of
play to learning. She founded Strong National Museum of Play® in 1968,
and it opened to the public in 1982. Strong is the only museum in the
world devoted solely to the study of play as it illuminates American
culture.
Collecting was Margaret Strong’s favorite form of play and Strong
National Museum of Play® is the legacy of the fun she had doing it.
During her lifetime she amassed an unsurpassed collection of dolls,
toys, games, and other items that celebrate play.
Margaret Strong played in many ways. She excelled at competitive sports
like archery, golf, and bowling, but also enjoyed quieter pastimes like
gardening and flower arranging.
The whimsical architecture of the museum reflects the colorful, engaging
playful experiences that await guests within.
Today Strong National Museum of Play® continues to build on Margaret
Strong’s collections, exploring the many ways, past and present, that
Americans play.
